ELLICOTT CITY, MD — Su Casa, a locally-owned furniture and accessories store, is proud to continue the redevelopment of Historic Ellicott City by announcing the expansion of their current Main Street store to provide an attraction and hub for the community. The new store will expand to approximately 10,000 square feet, allowing the business to host and support local workshops, community events and more.
“We envision a space where people can go to feel inspired,” says Su Casa owner, Nick Johnson. “Su Casa is deeply committed to the town’s success, which is why we’re not only reopening – we’re investing. We want to make our store a resource for the community, giving people even more of a reason to come back to town.”
Having recently completed the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, Johnson believes Su Casa is even better prepared for this monumental undertaking. The new store space will not only be a place to purchase great items, but also will serve as a hub for people to meet, learn and have fun. It will boast new features such as a Design Studio, where people can join and host workshops, community events and more. While construction is still going on, plans have already begun. Charlie Barton, a popular, Baltimore-based artist, is planning a special screen printing workshop in the new space and requests from local bloggers and community groups have come in.
The current store reopened in early July, following the second round of catastrophic floods in Ellicott City. Water damage, layers of mud and lack of access to the shopping district made the idea of reopening a question for the small business – but only for a short time. From the moment the rain stopped, there was an outpouring of positive support from Su Casa customers, the community and Ellicott City/Howard County officials. One person even stopped by just to hug the team and thank them for reopening in her town.
“I’m thankful that Su Casa and Nick have again committed to being part of the amazing Historic Ellicott City business community,” said Howard County Councilman, Jon Weinstein. “Su Casa adds much to the character of the town and is a huge draw for people around the region. We’re lucky to have Su Casa on Main Street.”
The new store will be larger than the current Fells Point and Ellicott City stores combined. The store size will allow the team to invest in more on-site inventory – jumping from 20 home-display vignettes to approximately 50 vignettes. These changes will also allow the store to expand their team, increasing jobs in the area and adding further development to Howard County.
