In Elkridge, Multiple Murders and One Attempted Suicide

Howard County police are identifying the suspect and victims in a murder suicide that occurred at a home in Elkridge last night.

The suspect, Nayyar Abbas Syed, 61, was pronounced dead at St. Agnes hospital overnight.

The suspect’s wife, Syeda Aalia Nayyar, 57; daughter, Syeda Fatima, 25; and daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima, 33, were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect’s son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, 31, is currently at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with critical injuries.

The suspect’s granddaughter, age three months, was in the home but not harmed. She received a wellness check at the hospital and will be placed in the custody of a family member.

Just before 10 p.m. yesterday, police received multiple 911 calls indicating that neighbors in the area heard gunshots. Dispatchers also received a call from the suspect indicating he had shot his family and intended to kill himself. All of the victims lived at the residence in the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry. The suspect lived elsewhere. No forced entry was observed.

The investigation is ongoing.

Howard County police are investigating an apparent murder and attempted suicide with several victims at a home in Elkridge.

Police were called to the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry at approximately 10 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Inside the home, responding officers located three adult females deceased, two adult males with critical injuries, and a juvenile who was unharmed.

The two adult males, one of whom is believed to be the suspect, were transported to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminarily, detectives believe all those involved are related.
