Howard EcoWorks kicked off the spring and early summer of 2024 with major conservation efforts around Baltimore and Howard Counties. This work was largely focused on urban and underserved areas of the region. EcoWorks’ crews planted 585 native trees and shrubs along with 2,605 native perennials such as wildflowers, sedges, and ferns. These projects are restoring natural environments and habitats while tackling climate resiliency.
The organization had a stellar start to the year with various environmental projects funded by different organizations notably, Howard County Government, Chesapeake Bay Trust, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
Some of the major projects that can be found around the counties include:
⦁ 100 trees and shrubs planted in the Ellicott Mills Community of Catonsville, MD
⦁ 100 bare-root trees planted in a forested area behind Howard Community College
⦁ 113 trees planted at Serenity Ridge Natural Arboretum in Windsor Mill
⦁ 2 new conservation gardens spanning 450 sq ft at Bellow Springs Elementary School
⦁ 750 sq ft conservation garden at Stonebrook Community in Columbia, MD
Additionally, many smaller projects, including tree plantings and garden installations at private residences, churches, and HOAs, are contributing to the overall environmental impact in local communities. These efforts aim to address stormwater runoff, loss of biodiversity, and habitat restoration through low-tech, low-cost solutions.
“These projects are a testament to our commitment to creating sustainable and resilient communities,” said Lori Lilly, Founder and Executive Director of Howard EcoWorks. “We are proud of our staff and crew for implementing so many meaningful projects and for such supportive partners to make a tangible difference.”
Howard EcoWorks is an environmental non-profit organization based in Columbia, Maryland, that engages and educates the community about environmental sustainability and restoration, while creating pathways to green jobs through our workforce development programs.
