HCPD Press Release:
Howard County Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred inside the Columbia mall.

At 6:10 p.m. police received a call for gunfire in the area of the food court. Responding officers located one male subject deceased and are working to identify him.

Through investigation, police determined that those involved left mall property. There is no ongoing threat or danger to the public, and officers are working to evacuate people in an orderly fashion. Detectives believe the victim was targeted.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this early stage.

On July 25th in the Oakland Mills area of Columbia, police responded to a non-fatal shooting, bringing the local tally for shootings to two. Based on social media chatter on NextDoor and elsewhere, Howard County residents are sounding the alarm that crime is out-of-hand in a county known regionally and nationally for being one of the best places to live, having a very low crime rate.

In that incident, police responded to the 9600 block of Whiteacre Road for a report of gunshots and located an 18-year-old male with a single gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Shock Trauma and later released. Police are still investigating.

Residents have voiced concerns that car thefts and thefts from vehicles are rising. A group in Elkridge recently met with Howard County State’s Attorney to discuss their fears regarding an increase in criminal activity in that area.

This article will be updated periodically with breaking news regarding the Mall shooting.
