County Needs Board Members Who Have Received Mental Health Services

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking specific consumer, applicants interested in serving on the Howard County Local Behavioral Health Advisory Board (HCLBHA). At this time, the Board is addressing vacancies that must be filled by current or previous consumers of substance use disorder treatment services. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 27.

“Our Local Behavioral Health Advisory Board plays a vital role in our mission to enhance behavioral health outcomes for members of our community who need help,” said Ball. “We need dedicated and caring community members who are experienced with the process and challenges of treatment and who share our goal of expanding behavioral health resources and strengthening our system of care for our neighbors. I encourage you to bravely join us in our effort to ensure that effective behavioral health resources are available to all in our community.”

Board members contribute to advancing the behavioral health interests of people residing in Howard County. Comprised of 28 members, the Board must include 18 appointed members: seven consumers, seven family members, two professional/provider/advocates and two at-large. The final 10 members are ex-officio and represent the Department of Social Services, Public Defender’s Office, Department of Community Resources and Services, State Attorney’s Office, Department of Corrections, Police Department, Circuit Court of Howard County, Department of Juvenile Services, Parole and Probation, and the Howard County Public School System.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 years of age or older, have an interest in the success of our behavioral health resources and be able to attend the Board’s meetings, held virtually the second Wednesday of each month at 5:00 p.m.

Interested applicants should complete an application online by visiting www.howardcountymd.gov/applybc and selecting “Local Behavioral Health Advisory Board” in the form. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment will be forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.

The Howard County Local Behavioral Health Advisory Board advises the County Health Officer and the County Executive related to their responsibility to plan, manage and monitor Behavioral Health programs and services for Howard County residents.
